The Income Tax Department has issued different ITR (Income Tax Return) files for taxpayers categorized on the basis of income, the source of income and many other factors to ensure easy compliance.

The Income Tax Department has issued different ITR (Income Tax Return) files for taxpayers categorized on the basis of income, the source of income and many other factors to ensure easy compliance. Taxpayers can download these ITR forms online.
The ITR-2 Form can be filed by individuals and HUFs receiving income other than "Profits and Gains from Business or Profession".
For example, persons having income from below sources can file ITR-2 Form:
  • Salary/Pension
  • House Property
  • Capital Gains/loss on sale of investments/property (Both Short Term and Long Term)
  • Other Sources (including winning from Lottery, bets on Race Horses and other legal means of gambling)
  • Foreign Assets/Foreign Income
  • Agricultural Income more than Rs 5000
  • Resident not ordinarily resident and a Non-resident

Here is the step-by-step guide for filing ITR-2 Form online:
The ITR-2 Form can be submitted either online or offline. The process for both offline and online ITR-2 filing is provided below.
How to file ITR-2 Offline?
ITR can be filed offline by only these individuals:
  • who are of the age of 80 years or more
  • whose income is less than Rs 5 lakhs per year and who do not have to claim a refund in the return

The ITR can be filled offline by:
  • furnishing a return in a physical paper form
  • furnishing a bar-coded return

The Income Tax Department will issue an acknowledgement at the time of submission of the physical paper return. The taxpayers need to save this acknowledgement slip for future use.

How to file ITR-2 Online?
The ITR can be filled offline by:
  • furnishing the return electronically under digital signature
  • transmitting the data electronically and then submitting the verification of the return in Return Form ITR-V

In online ITR filing, the acknowledgement is sent to the registered email ID of the taxpayer. The taxpayers are required to sign it and send it to the Income Tax Department’s CPC office in Bangalore within 120 days of e-filing. Since ITR-2 is an annexure-less form, you do not need to attach any documents when you send it CPC office.
