AGRA: BJP workers on Monday staged a protest at Aligarh police station after a cow vigilante was arrested in connection with a 2009 case of violating section 144 of the CrPC. The protesters demanded that inspector Naresh Kumar of Bannadevi police station be suspended for purposely arresting the man on Janmashtami and hurting Hindu sentiments.
SP (City) Atul Srivastava said that the court had issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against Rakesh Ramsan, the cow vigilante, and the police had simply followed the court's order in arresting him.
He said the suspect had been booked under section 188 of IPC (disobedience of order promulgated by public servant) in violation of section 144 of CrPC (prohibits any assembly of five or more people in an area where it has been imposed).
According to BJP worker Manav Mahajan, police had done this to defame the image of BJP. “Some people are still working with the mindset of the Samajwadi party. We need action against the police inspector,” he said.
Former mayor Shakuntala Bharti, who was also present at the police station, said that police had recalled the incident after nine years, and arrested the cow vigilante on the day of a Hindu festival on purpose. She added if they “really had guts, they should arrest members of the other community on the day of their festival”. “We will not tolerate this,” she said.
