BATHINDA: A district court on Friday acquitted three members of the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), including its head Jagtar Singh Tara, in an unlawful activities and Explosive Act case of 2014. Additional district and sessions judge Kanwaljit Singh acquitted Tara and his alleged accomplices Ramandeep Singh and Amarjit Singh for lack of evidence.
Ramandeep was, however, sentenced to one year imprisonment under the Arms Act in the same case.
Ramandeep and Amarjit were on bail in this case. However, Ramandeep is in jail for his role in another criminal case. Tara is serving life imprisonment in former chief minister Beant Singh assassination case.
Officials said that in November 2014, a case under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, Explosives Act and Arms Act was registered against Ramandeep after police claimed to have seized arms and explosives from his possession. Tara and Amarjit Singh were named in the case. Ramandeep was said to be in touch with Tara and for getting training of weapons in Bangkok whereas Amarjit was accused of sending money for subversive activities to him.
Police had also claimed that Ramandeep was lured by Tara through social networking site like Facebook and sent unspecified amount of money from Europe for subversive activities.
Defence counsel Harpal Singh Khaara said the prosecution failed to prove any charges. He said the letter heads were photo copies and originals were not found whereas the forensic examination could not conclusively prove that the powder recovered from their possession was actually explosives.
