SILCHAR: An auto-rickshaw driver who had been abducted from Panibhora locality of Cachar district was found dead in a forest in Karimganj district on Wednesday night. Locals put up a blockade on NH 306 - which connects Silchar and Aizwal - at Panibhora from 9 am to 5 pm on Thursday in protest against the murder.
A senior police officer said Rupam Paul (38), the owner and driver of an auto-rickshaw, had on August 2 left for Samarikona in Hailakandi with three passengers.
He had informed his wife Suma before leaving for Samarikona. "This was his last call. The next day, some unknown persons telephoned me saying that my husband had been abducted and he would be released in exchange of hefty ransom," said Suma. Family members had filed an FIR with Dholai police station.
DIG (southern Assam range) Devraj Upadhay and SP (Cachar) Rakesh Raushan rushed to the blockade and helped bring the situation under control on Thursday.
Raushan said six persons have been booked in connection with the abduction and killing and police are on the lookout to nab two other accused persons. The SP said DIG Upadhay ordered suspension of the Dolai police station OC Bhaskar Jyoti Das on Thursday.
