Mixed response to Congress bandh across Rajasthan
Congress workers protest in Ajmer and Jodhpur during Bharat bandh on Monday
AJMER/JAISALMER/ALWAR/UDAIPUR/KOTA: Bharat Bandh evoked a mixed response across the state. While Ajmer, Udaipur and some other district remained closed, Jaisalmer, Alwar functioned normally. Most shopkeepers and business establishments were angry that the Congress didn’t support the Sarv Samaj Bandh on September 6 so they did not heed to the closure demand of Congress on Monday.

In Bijaynagar town of Ajmer, Congress organized rally on bullock carts to show protest. Market associations had already showed support to Congress on this issue. Member of Parliament of Ajmer Raghu Sharma said that market associations voluntary closed shop to support Congress. Even schools and petrol pumps remained closed.
In Jaisalmer, although Congress did its best to shut down the markets but businessmen and traders were adamant on functioning normally. Barmer, however, remained shut.
Almost all shops remained open in Jaisalmer even as Congress workers kept roaming in the markets and kept appealing to shopkeepers to shut shops. The business community was irked that Congress had not shown support to the Sarv Samaj Bandh on September 6. Heavy police force accompanied Congress leaders who later gathered at the Hanuman chauraha for a meeting.
In Udaipur, private schools, colleges, main markets and other business establishments remained shut.
Congress supporters staged a massive protest outside petrol pumps and raised slogans against soaring fuel prices which they claimed had made life miserable for the common man. Though the bandh call was given for half day from 8am to 2pm, yet some observed the bandh the whole day.
The associates of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other business organizations extended support to the bandh and, therefore, all shops were shut.

Early in the day, at most places groups of Congress workers came out requesting shopkeepers to down shutters. In Ajmer’s Vaishali Nagar, a dispute erupted when BJP workers were asking the shops to remain open. Angry Congress workers broke the glasses of the shop. Police took control of the situation.
Alwar and Bharatpur saw conflicting response. The business community in Alwar protested against the bandh and even shouted slogans against Congress and Rahul Gandhi while Bharatpur supported the bandh.
In Kota, Bundi, Jhalawar and Baran districts of Hadauti region, several shops and business establishments were operational. Several markets of Hadauti region including Nahar Ka Chotta in Bundi city remained open challenging the bandh with posters which read ‘Where were you on September 6?......Why have you come on September 10?........Extend support…….accept support’.
