JAIPUR: The high court has directed the medical department to set up a deaddiction centre at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Ajmer to treat drug addicted children around the Dargah area. The division bench of Justice M Rafiq and Goverdhan Bardhar was hearing a suo motu petition. The court also asked the government to submit the number of cases registered against the drug peddlers and chargesheet filed against them.
Ajmer in Rajasthan stands second in the country among cities with most drug addicted children after Goa but there is no de-addiction centre there.
The addicted children have no place to go for treatment, the high court was informed by the state police in a reply earlier. An Ajmer police report filed in the court had said that Goa stands first in the number of drug addicted children followed by Ajmer and the third position goes to Kullu in Himachal Pradesh.
The surprising fact is that there is no de-addiction centre in Ajmer and the police are left with no other option except to free the children addicted to drugs after arrests. These children were also found indulging in criminal activities, said the police. The report said the drug menace is rampant in the dargah area and Pushkar in the district. The court said there is need for deaddiction centres and serious action to be taken against drug peddlers to address the issue.
