Supreme Court seeks report from Uttar Pradesh govt on Lakhimpur Kheri violence

Hours after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was set up and a judicial inquiry panel appointed, the first arrests - two men, part of Union minister of state for home Ajay Mishra Teni's convoy that allegedly ran over and killed four farmers - were made in Sunday's Lakhimpur Kheri killings case. The minister's son, Ashish Mishra, has been summoned by the SIT.

Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) on Thursday constituted a nine-member committee headed by a DIG-rank officer to monitor the ongoing probe in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident to ensure transparency.

Several Punjab Congress leaders, including state ministers and MLAs, were allowed to head towards Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh, hours after they were detained at a police station in Saharanpur. (PTI)

Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS), an affiliate of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Thursday demanded a fair and unbiased investigation into Lakhimpur Kheri violence in which eight people were killed. Badri Narayan Choudhary, All India general secretary of BKS, told ANI that farmers were also killed in the violence and the government should ensure proper investigation. (ANI)

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who arrived here on Thursday to meet the families of two farmers killed in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence, said by allowing Union minister Ajay Kumar Mishra to continue on the post, the Centre is giving the message that those in power can do anything. (PTI)

A group of Congress workers led by the party's Uttar Pradesh unit president Ajay Kumar Lallu staged a protest outside the Raj Bhawan here on Thursday, raising slogans against the state government over the Lakhimpur Kheri violence in which eight people, including four farmers, were killed. (PTI)

The CPM on Thursday said the "gruesome attack" on protesters in Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh marked a "new level of violence" against the farmers' movement that has been going on for the last 10 months. (PTI)

Senior RSS functionary Indresh Kumar on Thursday condemned the Lakhimpur Kheri violence but lashed out at the opposition parties, accusing them of creating an "atmosphere of hatred and violence" in the country. He congratulated the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh for constituting an enquiry into the incident to bring the culprits to justice. (PTI)

Senior Congress leader Harish Rawat and others were stopped by the district administration at the Uttar Pradesh-Uttarakhand border as they arrived here on their way to Lakhimpur Kheri to meet the families of the victims of violence during a farmers' protest that left eight people dead. (PTI)

Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel on Thursday hit back at the opposition BJP for criticising him over his announcement of giving a financial assistance to the victims of violence in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri, and said this "heart-wrenching" tragedy involving farmers should not be compared to any other incident.
