LUCKNOW: Two incidents of brawl at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) on Thursday and Friday has brought the focus on inadequate toilet facilities and sanitation at the medical university. Incidentally, the use of toilet, was the main reason behind the scuffle in both the cases.
Speaking to a number of women attendants, TOI found that they find it difficult to use public toilets at KGMU, which remain squalid with unbearable stench.

Parveen Jahan from Ambedkarnagar, whose mother is admitted at the general surgery ward of the trauma centre, said, “It is a very bad situation. While men can relieve themselves anywhere, it is a struggle for female attendants who suffer from suffer deeply from inadequate facilities... I have to think for hours before going to the toilet because they are too dirty.”
Another attendant on the third floor of the trauma centre Krishna Devi said, “The toilets stink. One either has to delay the use for hours or sit through the stench.”
“Given the number of patients and their attendants coming to KGMU everyday, there is definitely a need for more public toilets here,” said Maya Singh, another attendant.
At the Gandhi ward, on Friday, there was no water in public toilets, which put female attendants in a tough spot. Vineeta, who was attending to her father admitted in the ward, said, “I went to the toilet, but there was no water. I will have to wait for another family member to come before I can go out.”
