Children dress up like Bharathi to mark his death anniversary
MADURAI: Students of Tamil Baptist Primary School and Nadar Middle School in Kovilpatti, Tuticorin district, took part in the 97th death anniversary observance of Subramanya Bharathi, noted poet and freedom fighter, in his native village Ettayapuram near Kovilpatti on Wednesday. To mark this day, 97 students dressed up like him and took an oath to instill the spirit of patriotism in them.
They also paid a floral tribute to the freedom fighter’s statue at his residence.
Participants took out a procession to his house and carried cloth bags and raised slogans to put an end to use of plastic carry bags to protect the environment. Reciting the poems written by him, the children also raised slogans to give importance to women empowerment by educating them. President of Bharathi Memorial Trust, P Muthumurugan, organized events with Kovilpatti Rotary Club.
District revenue officer, M Veerappan presided over the events organized by the department of information and public relations and garlanded the statues of Subramanya Bharathi at his residence.
