Two weeks after conman’s arrest in Indore, EOW gets his custody

MUMBAI: Two weeks after camping in Indore to take into custody an accused in a Rs 9-crore cheating case, the Mumbai police finally won a legal battle to bring the 62-year-old managing director of a private firm back to the city. “We will bring Rajiv Soni to Mumbai on Saturday and produce him before a court for remand in connection with the cheating case,” said an officer attached to the city economic offences wing (EOW).

“Soni then moved Indore HC claiming he was suffering from several diseases. He sought five weeks’ transit bail and said he will appear before the investigating authorities...After going through his medical papers, the HC found that the illness was not serious...and granted transit remand to EOW,” said the officer.
The complainant, an officebearer of a bank’s south Mumbai branch, had filed a cheating case against Rajiv, Vijay Soni, Sh arang Soni, Nirmalkumar Sh arma, G P Mathur, and Mohanlal Hemrajan. Rajiv’s firm took loan to buy goods from other firms, submitted bogus invoice bills to the bank and diverted the money into their own accounts, said the police.
