Expedite works for Irai river, officials told
Chandrapur: Irai Riverfront Development Plan drafted for rejuvenation and facelift of Irai river is all set to get a boost. In a meeting held in Mumbai on Monday state’s finance and planning minister Sudhir Mungantiwar issued a series of directives to expedite the works under the plan.
State government has prepared a detailed plan for development of Irai river which is lifeline of Chandrapur city.
But the works under are underway at a slow pace since last year.
There were plans to rejuvenate the river by deepening and de-silting it between Padoli and Chaurala bridges. Massive digging and de-silting was carried out in summer 2016, but the work stalled after monsoon the same year.
The plan also includes construction of 3.5km long retaining wall along the river’s bank on the city’s side to protect human habitations from floods. Plan also includes beautification of 1km long stretch of bank between Datala and Padoli bridges. Construction of chain of weirs ahead of Irai dam downstream too is part of the plan.
Mungantiwar reviewed the progress and directed MHADA, which shoulders multiple works under the plan, to expedite the works. He told the officials to make sure that all the works have logical and full technological support.
He directed the officers to keep the flood-line of the river in view while carrying out these works. He said a series of barrages are going to come up on the river at Dhanora, Amadi, Arvi (Dhanora) and directed the officers to take help of WAPCOS, which is on the government’s panel, for the work.
