Chhatisgarh: Bandh hits transport, business sectors

RAIPUR: The nationwide shutdown called by opposition parties led by Congress on Monday against the rise in fuel prices, hit transport and business sector across the state. Except for government offices and emergency services, most establishments including schools and colleges and shops remained closed.
Public transport was paralysed in most parts of the state with city bus services, autos and other public transport systems supporting the bandh call.

Traders too kept their establishments closed in support of the bandh.
Passengers were inconvenienced as most of the state transport buses didn't ply in Raipur, Durg, Rajnandgaon, Mahasamund and Bilaspur districts. Auto rickshaws too kept off the roads in Raipur.
Almost all petrol pumps remained shut in Raipur till late afternoon, in addition to malls and theatres.
Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce stepped forward in support, and many business establishments and educational institutions were shut for the day. The schools that had exams scheduled had to postpone the papers as most students couldn't reach school due to absence of conveyance facility.
Local markets and shops were also closed for most part of the day, and others were forced shut by Congress workers, as early as five in the morning. Congress workers led by district party president Vikas Upadhyaya went around Telibandha, Station Chowk, Bus Stand, Jai Stambh Chowk and urged the residents to offer their support.

No untoward incident was reported from any part of the state, said police.
As a symbolic protest against the fuel price hike, former mayor Kiranmayee Nayak along with a crowd of supporters went on the streets riding a horse. The others joined on bicycles appealing people to support the bandh.
Later in the day, effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, "inflation" were burned at busy traffic squares, in addition to street plays on the price hike. Congress state in charge PL Punia, Vikas Upadhaya, Kuldeep Juneja and others were also present.
Barring hospital and emergency services, all establishments remained closed till 3pm.
A near total bandh was observed in cities like Raigarh, Korba, Bilaspur, Jagdalpur and Rajandgaon.
Police personnel were deployed in large numbers in the markets as well as outside the offices of the central government in Raipur.
State Congress unit communication wing chief Shailesh Nitin Trivedi said the bandh was successful. Punia said that Congress party received exceptional support in Chhattisgarh from Chamber of Commerce, trader's association, private schools and colleges, auto-bus associations.
