SALEM: A Class IX student committed suicide by consuming rat poison after her parents refused to buy her a mobile phone at Kannankuruchi on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday morning.
The deceased was identified as R Mega Darshini, 14, of Perumal Koil Street in Kannankuruchi. She was Class IX student of a government higher secondary school at Kannankurushi.
When Mega Darshini asked for a mobile phone on Tuesday, her parents refused to buy her one.
Instead, the parents told Mega that they would buy her a mobile phone after she completes Class X with good marks.
Upset over this, Mega Darshini did not talk to anyone at home.
On the next day morning, Mega was found in her bed with froth on her mouth. She was taken to the Salem government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College hospital for treatment.
During examination, doctors came to know that she had consumed rat poison.
“The girl failed to respond to treatment and died in the hospital,” said the Kannankuruchi police. A case has been registered.
