Humiliated, girl kills self by jumping into well

Salem: A Class VII student committed suicide by jumping into a well after her class teacher allegedly humiliated her in front of other students near Konganapuram here on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as T Vasanthi, 12, of Arisipalayam near Konganapuram. She was a Class VII student of the government higher secondary school at Arisipalayam.
On Wednesday, Vasanthi went to school as usual.Her class teacher A Reena, 35, found Rs 600 missing from her wallet. “She doubted Vasanthi and kept on asking her whether she had taken the cash from her wallet in front of other students,” said J Manivannan, inspector of Konganapuram police station. He said the teacher also inquired Vasanthi during the interval time.
Feeling humiliated, Vasanthi rushed out of the teachers’ room and jumped into a nearby well that belonged to a farmer identified as Seerangan. Locals, who witnessed the girl jumping into the well, immediately alerted schoolteachers and the Konganapuram police.
Fire and rescue services personnel retrieved the girl’s body after three hours of struggle. The Konganapuram police have registered a case and initiated an inquiry with the teacher. They said Reena will be arrested under the charges of abetment of suicide, if proved guilty.
