SURAT: Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) convener Alpesh Kathiriya was arrested by crime branch from Velanja village near the city on Monday. He was in a marriage function. Kathiriya was produced in court which sent him to judicial custody.
Acting on a tip off, the crime branch team reached Shubhvilla Society in Velanja. There was panic among supporters of Kathiriya, but he was arrested without any problem by the cops.
Kathiriya was attending the marriage of his friend Ashish Vaghasiya and business partner in law firm.
Kathiriya tried to bargain for some time with the cops, but they refused. He tried to delay his arrest by talking to senior police officers, but that did not work.
“Police had specific information about Kathiriya’s presence at the spot. It was a swift move by the cops and hence the accused and his supporters did not get time to create disturbance,” a crime branch officer said.
Kathiriya told media persons from police van, which was taking him to court, that, “We will meet if I am alive.”
Kathiriya, who was arrested in November 2018 on sedition charges, got bail in December. Multiple offences were registered against him in Varachha and Sarthana police stations of the city when he was out on bail. Police approached court seeking cancellation of his bail. The court on January 15 ordered cancellation of his bail and since then Kathiriya was on the run.

Meanwhile, health condition of PAAS convener Dharmik Malaviya and Nikunj Kakadiya deteriorated on the seventh day of their indefinite fast here on Monday. They are fasting to protest arrest of Kathiriya and demand justice for Patidar youths who became victims of police atrocity during the quota movement.
Medical check-up of the duo was conducted by doctors of New Civil Hospital at the spot of their fast in Nana Varachha. Due to fasting, their sugar level had dropped and some other imbalances were noticed by the doctors. The activists were advised medical treatment but they refused.
