SURAT: Two groups belonging to different communities pelted stones at each other after a tiff over a cricket match in Udhna area of the city on Sunday morning. Police resorted to a mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd and have made tight security arrangements in the area. A couple of boys from both the groups suffered minor injures and were admitted to a hospital.

Young boys from the two communities had fought with each other over a cricket match in Sanjay Nagar locality on Saturday. They met again on Sunday to reach a compromise and play a friendly match but their arguments spiralled out of control.
Elders from the two communities joined the fight. “The groups then began to pelt stones at each other. Majority of the residents were at home it being a Sunday and the situation just flared up,” said a police officer.
Police teams from different parts of the city reached the spot within minutes. Personnel from State Reserve Police and crime branch too reached there.
“The situation was brought under control immediately. No one suffered major injury and there was no damage to property during the clash. We are keeping a tight vigil in the area,” police said, adding that 20 constables and two police sub-inspectors have been posted at the spot. “We have detained a few suspects for their alleged involvement in stone pelting. They are likely to be arrested after detailed investigation,” police said.
