THANE: Around 15 godowns storing plastic products were gutted down in a freak fire in the early hours of Wednesday in suburban Mumbra.
The incident was reported around 5am in the Bharat market area abutting Shil phata after nearby residents noticed dense smoke coming out of the premises.
The fire brigade and the regional disaster management cell of the Thane corporation was immediately alerted that swung into action and started dousing the blaze that had soon spread to adjoining units.

A member of the rescue team deployed for fire fighting at the site said they had to tear down the metal partitions separating the godowns before the blaze could be controlled. The units were probably used for stocking platic materials and the huge inflammable stock helped the fire spread so quickly, hinted the officer.
The entire premises was destroyed in the fire that was eventually doused after nearly two hours. The cause of fire was not ascertained.
“There was no injury or casualty to human life reported in the incident. The fire destroyed all the units operating from the premises and the cause of the fire is still unknown,” informed Santosh Kadam, RDMC. Meanwhile, nearby residents claimed the godowns were illegally built and have now appealed to the Thane commissioner seeking prompt action preventing any casalaty or major mishap in the future.
