Container truck gets stuck under Vitawa ROB, leads to traffic snarl

THANE: Motorists had a harrowing time on Monday afternoon after a huge container truck got stuck under the Vitawa railway overbridge along Thane-Belapur Road. The heavy vehicle tried to cross the subway but got stuck. There was no height barried as well installed before the bridge
The driver was on his way to Gujarat when the incident took place. Luckily, the driver realised his mistake and managed to stop the vehicle in time before any more damage could be caused to the bridge.However, due to this, a massive traffic jam took place on both lanes. The Thane traffic police rushed to the spot to tackle the situation.
All steps taken to remove the truck from under the bridge proved futile. Finally, the tyres of the heavy vehicle had to be deflated and then with the help of a crane the vehicle was brought out. The bridge wasn’t damaged nor were the railway services affected, said a Central Railway official.
“There is no height barrier at the spot, due to which the driver took the subway and got stuck. There was a massive traffic jam on either sides of the narrow stretch. The height barrier that was installed here had got damaged by another container truck long ago and had not yet been repaired by the railways,” informed a traffic police official. Meanwhile, the Central Railway protection force at Thane has registered an offense under sections 154, 159 and 174 of the Railway Act against the driver of the container.
