Thiruvananthapuram: The probe into the bomb attack on Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) office at Njandoorkonam, has led the police to a group of men, who had made it a habit of creating tension among different political outfits through miscreant activity.
The police have recorded their arrest at Kazhakkoottam police station. They were identified as Akhil of Puliyankode Colony near Njandoorkonam, Unni of Mukkumpalam near Vattappara, Shiyas of Poolanthara near Pothencode and Amal Das of Mithrumala near Kallara.
Among the accused, Akhil and Unni were active members of DYFI, the youth wing of CPM until a few months ago. They were ousted from the party for involvement in miscreant activities, police authorities said. Shiyas and Amaldas were their friends.
On September 4 around 2.45am, a crude bomb was hurled at the BMS office at Njandoorkonam by two men who arrived on a motorcycle. Surveillance camera footages examined by cops revealed that it was Akhil and Shiyas, who were on the motorcycle. The vehicle belonged to Akhil.
Kazhakootam circle inspector S Y Suresh said that the accused committed the crime to create tension between BJP and CPM activists in the locality.
“They held grudge towards CPM for expelling them from the party and towards BJP activists for assaulting them during a conflict when they were still CPM workers,” said the officer.
They had created tension in the past at Pothencode, Chenkottukonam and Powdikonam regions by vandalizing flagpoles and flex boards of both parties.

“Incidentally, one of the arrested, Unni, is an accused in a similar case that is being probed by Vattappara police,” Suresh said. The case pertains to bomb attack on the house of Ajeesh of Vattappara a few days ago. Unni did this right after Ajeesh had a public showdown with a CPM ward member here over a dispute. He wanted to portray the act as one committed by CPM workers.
The CI added that Akhil and Unni had a history of using crude bombs during fights. They had purchased crackers from a shop at Pothencode and extracted gun powder from them to make crude bombs.
In a related development, Pothencode police have registered a case against the licensee of the cracker shop as their licence expired in the year 2014.
