5 held for illegally ferrying sand

TRICHY: Trichy city police arrested 5 people for illegally transporting sand from river Cauvery here on Wednesday. Police have also confiscated two trucks ferrying 8 units of sand.
Based on a tip-off the Village Administrative Officer (VAO) of Velli Thirumuththam in Srirangam taluk of Bharathidasan, conducted a surprise check along the Trichy-Kallanai Road. During the process, the revenue official noticed two trucks carrying sand were heading towards the city.
Both the trucks were intercepted at a ‘Y’ Road junction at Thiruvalarsolai on Trichy-Kallanai Road near Thiruvanaikoil in Trichy.
Police found the trucks carrying a total of 8 units of sand. They neither taken any prior permission from the concerned authorities nor had any papers, police said.
Based on a complaint by the VAO Bharathidasan with Srirangam police, a case was registered and five people were arrested however one managed to escape.
Those arrested were identified as K Saravanan, 35, K Ayyakannu, 38, and S Raja, 30, of Rice Mill Street in Mangammalpuram, Anbil in Lalgudi taluk, R Sundharrajan, 50, of Kodithurai Villai Kappukadu in Kanyakumari district and V Azeez, 25 of Mooppu Vilasu Puthanveedu, Kaarakonam, Trivandrum in Kerala. However, a sixth person identified as M Kennady of Kanyakumari is on the run.
