UDAIPUR: Hundreds of residents living in and around Ayad area protested against Udaipur Municipal Corporation’s (UMC) decision to rename the famous ‘Dhoolkot Chauraha’ to Sant Pipaji Chauraha.
People assembled in large numbers when they saw the new board put up at the chauraha. Following the protest, MLA Gulab Chand Kataria himself reached the spot to pacify the people.
The residents insisted on retaining the old name Dhoolkot which they said was a heritage site related to the 4,000-year-old Ahar civilization and had public sentiments attached to it. They claimed the Udaipur Municipal Corporation authorities didn’t bother to seek public consensus before deciding to rename the chauraha which sparked unrest among the people.
“Ayad has a glorious history and around 1951-52 the Archaeology and Museums Department began excavation here. It was last in 1960-61 when the department collaborated for horizontal excavation with the Deccan College, Pune,” said Rajesh Verma, a resident.
The Archaeological Museum in Ahar is a popular attraction which was made to preserve the excavated items of the ancient era.
