Vadodara: At times stating the obvious directly can land one in trouble. The Panchmahal police experienced a similar situation and had to bring down hoardings put up in Godhra town for awareness ahead of the Ganpati festivities.
The hoardings had stated that the Elephant God would not come to places where loud music was played, food items like dabeli, vada-pav and pani puri were distributed as prasad, where revelry dominated devotion, slogans were used in place of prayers, people were inebriated on the immersion day and other similar acts took place.
While this might not be unheard of, putting them on hoardings led to trouble for the Panchmahal police.
The hoardings were put up in the name of the Suraksha Setu Society and Panchmahal police. The police did not receive any formal objections regarding these hoardings, but messages condemning the act started circulating on the social media and the hoardings became a point of discussion in the town. The hoardings were brought down soon after they started facing criticism.
Cops found itself in a tight spot with some persons alleging that it did not come up with such hoardings during other festivals. It was also alleged that they were trying to say that a lot of bad practices took place during the Ganpati fest.
Panchmahal superintendent of police Leena Patil said that most material put up by the Suraksha Setu Society was about traffic awareness and there were only a few hoardings about Ganpati festival. She said that while there were no formal representations regarding the hoardings, these were removed after the police came to know that they had not gone down well.
