Bigg Boss 12 host Salman Khan: There's always a big reason for getting angry at a contestant on the show
Bollywood superstar Salman Khan is back to host another season of the most controversial reality show, Bigg Boss. The actor, while talking to the media at the launch of the show, spoke about his mother, who is an avid viewer of the show, and also revealed what makes him emotionally reactive on the show.
What brings you back every year to Bigg Boss? And what according you is the reason behind its popularity?
Ever since the show started, it has been getting better every year, in terms of promotion, TRPs and the contestants.
It has become the flagship show for the channel and the viewership is increasing every year. So when people are liking it and appreciating it, why not be a part of it? According to me, what works for the show is the support I get as a host from the creative team who get the contestants on board. They choose some really unique personalities from different walks of life, who make the show interesting from Monday to Friday. The amount of material that they give me during this period makes my Saturday and Sunday interesting.
Who have been your favourite contestants?
There have been lots of them and I am happy they all are doing good for themselves. The people who have gone over the top don’t have any work. There have also been people who have worked on their flaws, apologized on TV after knowing that they really messed up, even they are doing really well.
Do you get calls from people to cast you on the show?
I do get a lot of calls every year but I straight away tell them that I am not a part of the casting team.

Will there be a co-host with you this season?
No, there won’t be.
But there were rumours that Katrina Kaif would be hosting it with you?
Shayad.... Katrina ne he ye rumour phailaya hoga. (Laughs) She asked me one day about the theme of the show and asked me this year do they have a jodi? I said yes. She said, 'Then I should do it'. I asked her why, she replied, 'you do your impromptu thing and I will follow and stick to the script'. When I asked her about her remuneration, she said, 'We will keep it equal only, what’s your price is my price'".
How has the show helped you evolve as a person? And how much people relate to the show?
The people, who are watching Bigg Boss, will know that some contestants don’t react well on the show. And then viewers also start discussing about that contestant and his incorrect behaviour on the show. This means they would never behave like that in their personal lives. Then sometimes there are contestants who are larger than life on-screen but in personal life they are grounded and really nice, this also changes their thinking. They want to be like that person and vote for him. Like in season 8, Gautam Gulati lost the plot in first two weeks, but then he turned everything in his favour and won everyone’s heart. He went on to win the show which is a commendable thing. Then there was Manu Punjabi and Manveer Gurjar, Manu gave up his game for Manveer, which is such a beautiful thing.
Tell us something about the concept of 'Vichitra Jodis' this season?
There will be vichitra jodis and the creative team will make sure that the Jodis break in the first week itself. So no matter how much planning they come with, nothing is going to work. Because no matter how much they try to whisper and keep things secret, the creative will learn about it. So all their plans will ultimately fail.
Of late, you have stopped expressing your views about the contestants on social media especially after season 7? Why so?
My right to express on Twitter has been taken away (laughs). Now even if I want to tweet, I write and then it circulates in a group first, gets checked and then I tweet it. Phir bhi controversy hoti hai... smiles. Karne jao accha aur usmein se log galat matlab nikal lete hain toh kya kar sakte hain...
You have been shooting, doing live shows back to back? How do you manage so many things?
I am lucky I have work and my work is my hobby. I am fortunate that the enthusiasm is still there, and now I have the experience also. I am grateful that the childlike quality is also still alive in me and with these things I am able to entertain you guys.
Are there times when you get emotional during the show?
The only time I get emotional is when the show gets over and one person wins and the other loses. Also, when the flashback VT's of the contestant and their journey is played during their eviction on-screen, even that makes me emotional.
We have also seen you getting angry at the contestants...
As far as getting angry is concerned, I don't get upset for silly reasons on the show. There's always a major reason behind it. Sometimes the contestant loses the plot and doesn't realizes where and what he is doing. When I see them going wrong, I react, going against the channel and even the production house. I do it for their respect and their family, so when they come out of the TV show they don't stop getting work and love from the outside world.
